When "No" Became Our Biggest Advantage

When "No" Became Our Biggest Advantage

When we launched Ataay, we thought the biggest conversations would be about taste, quality, and ingredients.

Instead, many conversations with retailers focused on something else entirely: our format.

Our peanut butter and almond butter don't come in traditional jars. They come in a convenient squeeze pouch designed for real life. No spoon. No mess. No digging through a jar when you're on the move.

For us, it seemed obvious.

For some retailers, it was unfamiliar.

We heard the same concerns repeatedly. Would customers understand it? Why not use a jar like everyone else? Would people be willing to try something different?

The answer, it turns out, was yes.

Different Doesn't Always Fit Retail

Large retailers often rely on familiar categories. Products that look like what customers already know are easier to place on a shelf and easier to compare against existing brands.

Ataay didn't fit neatly into those expectations.

Our format challenged the idea that nut butter has to live in a jar at the back of a pantry. We imagined something more practical. Something you could take to work, on a hike, to the gym, or on a road trip.

Some buyers saw that difference as a risk.

We saw it as the future.

Where We Found Our Customers

Instead of focusing all our energy on retail shelves, we put our products directly into people's hands.

At farmers markets across Ontario, we had conversations. We offered samples. We listened.

And something surprising happened.

The same format that created hesitation in boardrooms created excitement at market stalls.

People immediately understood the convenience. They appreciated the portability. They loved the fact that there was no jar, no spoon, and no mess.

Most importantly, they loved the product.

Building a Business One Conversation at a Time

Farmers markets taught us something every young brand should remember:

You don't need everyone to say yes.

You just need to find the people who understand what you're building.

Every customer who stopped by our table, tried a sample, asked a question, or placed an order through our website helped validate what we believed from day one.

Being different wasn't our weakness.

It was our strength.

The Road Ahead

Today, Ataay continues to grow through farmers markets, word of mouth, and online sales at Ataay.co.

Would it have been easier if every retailer immediately embraced our format?

Probably.

But we wouldn't trade the relationships we've built with our customers along the way.

The lesson is simple: sometimes the thing that makes you stand out is the very thing others don't understand at first.

And that's okay.

After all, we didn't create Ataay to fit in.

We created it to make nut butter work better for real life. 🥜✨
